HOW TO REDUCE YOUR A/C ELECTRIC BILL:

Of course, you want to beat the heat this summer here in Broward County. You also know that cranking up your HVAC System can take a toll on your wallet. If you’re wondering how to keep cool and reduce your air conditioning bill, please read on to learn some exciting tips for keeping cool and saving money in South Florida. Today we will briefly discuss some short-term solutions and some long-term changes to help keep you cool and save your wallet from literal heat destruction. 🥵

SHORT-TERM SOLUTIONS:

-INSTALL A SMART THERMOSTAT:

Smart thermostats are not only affordable and easy to install, but they save you money on your utility bills so they technically pay for themselves in the long run. Smart thermostats save energy by adjusting the temperature in your home while you’re away or asleep. Some of the most popular remarkable smart thermostats can be controlled via an app from your phone and while learning your habits they make energy-saving adjustments automatically. It has been proven by the Department for Energy that programmable thermostats save consumers up to 10% per year on their utility bills.

Air-Tech HVAC offers Ecobee, Honeywell, and Nest thermostats, we will install and will help you setup on your own devices to save you time and make sure you are getting the most out of your device!

-SEAL YOUR WINDOWS:

Leaky windows make your air conditioning unit work harder than it should and jack up your utility bills. Leaky windows also let cold air out in the summer months and warm air out in the cooler months causing a significant increase in your bill. If you can’t currently afford to replace your windows try sealing them with caulk or weather stripping to improve the energy efficiency in your home and help put extra money back into your wallet.

-REPLACE YOUR HVAC AIR FILTER:

Air filters play a major role in your air conditioning unit by stopping the dust from blocking your air vents to help your system run smoothly. If your HVAC filter is filled with dirt or debris, the air cannot circulate properly or as easily. Air filters generally should be replaced at least once a month or more if you have children or pets in the home. They’re easy to replace and quite inexpensive.

For optimal performance, Air-Tech HVAC recommends replacing your air filter monthly and scheduling professional inspections twice a year – one before summer and another afterwards – to ensure all parts and components are functioning properly.

-AVOID COOKING INDOORS:

As the saying goes: Can't stand the heat? Get out of the kitchen. Throughout the summer months, it is important to follow this saying to keep your home cool. Consider a barbecue? By cooking outside you are reducing the temperature in the home and saving money in the summer months. If a barbecue is not a great option for you, you may want to consider a slow cooker or a crock pot, and even a microwave-friendly recipe that will save you time and money.

-SPEND TIME ELSEWHERE:

The more time you spend somewhere else, the less you’ll need to cool your home. This means more money in your pocket. Think of having dinner outside of the home, perhaps with one of your family members, and catching up on old times. Go swimming, or enjoy your favorite sporting events.

-STAY AT GROUND LEVEL:

If you have to stay indoors remember that heat rises, so if possible stick to the lower grounds in your home if you live in a two-story family home. This will prevent you from having to run the a/c system during the hottest days in the summer as the ground level is always cooler. You can reduce your settings at bedtime and enjoy a nice cold room to sleep in.

LONG-TERM CHANGES:

-GET YOUR AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM SERVICED:

Regular investment in your a/c system is one of the least expensive long-term money-saving tips. It’s highly recommended and important to have your HVAC unit regularly serviced at least twice a year to ensure its optimal performance. Coils need to be cleaned, voltage connections need to be checked regularly and refrigerant levels may need to be topped off.

-INSTALL CEILING FANS:

If you don’t already have ceiling fans, consider installing some throughout your home. Ceiling fans help to circulate the air in the home and make your home much cooler and more comfortable. Shutting off your a/c system and turning on your ceiling fans can lower your energy usage and reduces the burden on your HVAC unit.

-UPGRADE YOUR WINDOWS:

Some high-quality windows come with low-emissivity, or Low-E glass, which reflects long infrared waves to keep your home cooler. There are a couple of energy-saving options which include anti-reflective and tinted windows. These energy-efficient windows will help you take charge of your utility bills.

-PLANT SHADE TREES:

Trees can reduce sunlight while shading your whole property and reducing your energy bills in the process. Although blackout curtains and reflective blinds can keep your home cool, they will never outlive a tree. Great options for shade trees include River Birch, Dawn Redwood, Cypress & Weeping Willow. Something to keep in mind when planting shade trees, keep them away from any septic tank drainage fields and keep them away from your foundation.

-INSTALL SOLAR PANELS:

Solar panels generate electricity to help reduce your energy bills. You can lease panels, or you can buy an array outright if you choose to. Today’s solar panels are much more efficient than older panels of course and are much more affordable.

-INSULATE YOUR WALLS & ATTICS:

Poorly insulated crawl spaces, walls, and attics leak just as badly as inefficient windows. If you have an older home it tends to be leakier than of course any newer home. You should improve your insulation to not only make your home more comfortable and cozy, but you also want to save money on your utility bills.
