A/C unit down? Turn that frown upside down with these quick easy tips to keep you cool. Today we will briefly discuss a short list of things you can do to keep yourself cool in Broward County when your air conditioning unit is down. It is important to consider alternatives to keeping you cool in high humid temperatures here in South Florida. Especially when the temperatures are known to climb into the triple digits.

Follow the list of items below to implement keeping yourself and your family members cool throughout the heat. Here in Margate, FL, the best way to stay cool is to take a cold shower or bath, put ice on key body parts, close any window coverings or put foil in the windows to keep the heat out, avoid using any major Heat-Generating Appliances, turn on any fans in the home, use cool towels, and most important above all, STAY HYDRATED!. These quick tips will surely help keep you and your family cool when your air conditioning unit is down.

Take a Cold Shower or Bath:

It is important to take a cold shower or bath to bring down your body temperature in highly humid temperatures. This is most important, especially for the elderly or young children and babies.

Put Ice on Key Body Parts:

Some key body parts to put ice on are the back of your neck, the groin area, and the armpits. These are not necessarily the most intriguing places to put some ice, but these are spots where large blood vessels lie closer to the surface and will cool you down faster.

Close Window Coverings/Put Foil in the Windows:

If you have any window coverings make sure they are all closed to keep the heat and any sunlight away. This will help prevent any heat from entering the home and escalate the temperature any further. If you don’t have any window coverings, the most effective way to cut down the temperature in your home is to block out the sunlight by putting aluminum foil in the windows. Foil specifically is reflective. (the shiny side should face out). This will keep the temperature in the home steady and slow down or stop any increase in temperature.

Avoid using any Heat-Generating Appliances:

Anything like stoves, ovens and major appliances adds unnecessary heat to your home. While trying to stay cool it is best to cook during the day using a slow cooker or cook/grill outside. You can always opt for sandwiches made from your choice of cold cuts or any food items that are cold like potato salads or salads.

Turn on Fans:

Turning on fans in the home, remember to set them to a counterclockwise motion so that all the hot air is being sucked out and all the cool air can circulate in your home. If you want it to be even cooler, place some ice in a pan or a bucket and have the fan circulate in front of you, this will cool you down even faster.

Use Cool Towels:

You can always use a nice cool towel to the back of your neck. This will help you keep cool and relieve any stress areas in your body and the back of your neck.

Stay Hydrated:

While we all love the fabulous treats that are known to cool you down for a bit, the sugar increase will get your metabolism fueled and this will cause you to overheat, so it is important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Try to stay hydrated and keep away from anything that has too much sugar. Water is the key to being well-hydrated and keeping your body cool.
